The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has not been working since morning. A shutdown program is underway. No one can enter the building. No one can even leave. Because of this, all services of the NBR are closed.
In addition, activities at all customs houses and customs stations in the country, including Chittagong Port, Benapole, and Dhaka Customs House, have been suspended. This means that all types of customs clearance activities in import and export are suspended.
It has been seen on the spot that there is no work at the National Board of Revenue from 9 am to 2 pm. All the tables and chairs are empty. Almost all the officials and employees are continuously observing the shutdown program. Several hundred officials and employees are stationed on the road in front of the NBR. A large presence of security forces is also seen. They are not allowing anyone to enter or leave the NBR. The three gates of the NBR are locked.
The protesting officials and employees have started the 'March to NBR' program on Saturday, demanding reform of the revenue sector based on the participation of all parties and the removal of the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Officials from different parts of the country, including officials from the NBR's Dhaka office, have gathered in front of the NBR building in the capital since morning.
This movement is going on under the banner of NBR Reform Unity Council. NBR is the main revenue collecting agency of the country. June is the last month of the fiscal year. During this time, revenue collection is quite brisk. Therefore, it was announced that all the customs and tax offices of the country would be open today. But due to the movement, the agitating officials and employees have stopped all work today.
Members of the BGB, police, RAR and Coast Guard have closed the main gate of the NBR and taken positions inside. Security has been strengthened around the NBR building.
The protesting officers and employees of the organization are holding a 'March to NBR' program today demanding reform of the revenue sector based on the participation of all parties and the removal of the NBR chairman. In addition, a continuous 'shutdown' program has begun in customs and tax offices across the country from today.
