Amid the US-Israeli attacks, Iran has announced the name of its new supreme leader. A statement published on state media early Monday morning local time named Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Not much is known about Mojtaba's personality or political position outside Ali Khamenei's inner circle. Even within Iran, his personality is shrouded in mystery. He rarely spoke publicly or appeared in public during his father's reign. However, despite being out of power for a long time, he had influence in military and intelligence operations. He was considered a favorite candidate for the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) because of his close ties to it. Mojtaba was given the full religious title of Ayatollah shortly after his name was announced on Monday.
"The election of Mojtaba Khamenei may come as a surprise to many, but it is a significant decision," said Vali Nasr, an expert on Iran and Shia Islam at Johns Hopkins University. "It is a continuation of Ali Khamenei's policies. He will also be able to consolidate power and establish control over the state system more quickly than other candidates."
