The United States is gradually withdrawing all its troops from Syria. Last week, all US troops were evacuated from a strategically important US military base and the base was handed over to the Syrian government.
Reuters reported this information in a report citing the US media outlet The Wall Street Journal.
The United States has several military bases in Syria, which were established more than a decade ago during the rise of the international terrorist group Islamic State (IS).
ISIS emerged in 2014 amid the Syrian civil war that began under former President Bashar al-Assad. Within a short time, the organization established its own so-called state by capturing vast areas of Syria and Iraq.
The United States deployed troops to Syria at that time to suppress ISIS. After the rise of ISIS in 2014, about 2,000 troops were sent to the country. Currently, there are about 1,000 US troops in various bases. All of them will be withdrawn in phases soon.
A senior US Defense Department official told the Wall Street Journal that while ISIS remains a threat to global peace and stability, the situation has changed. A relatively stable government has been established in Syria and the threat from ISIS is not as strong as it once was. Therefore, the decision to withdraw troops has been made.
He said that a group of soldiers has already been brought back and the relevant military base has also been handed over to the Syrian government.
