Bangladesh had appealed to the ICC to refuse to play the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns for its cricketers. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has received an official response from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
A BCB statement released at around 1:45 pm today (Wednesday) confirmed that the ICC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the full and smooth participation of the Bangladesh team in the tournament. At the same time, the world cricket governing body has expressed its interest in working closely to resolve the concerns raised by the BCB. The ICC said that the views and suggestions provided by the BCB as part of the detailed security plan for the tournament will be welcomed and duly taken into account.
The BCB also said that some recent reports in a section of the media have claimed that the BCB has been given a final warning or ultimatum by the ICC in this regard. However, the board has clarified that these claims are completely false, baseless and in no way consistent with the nature or content of the BCB's communication with the ICC.
The statement further said that the Bangladesh Cricket Board will continue to maintain a constructive, cooperative and professional relationship with the ICC and the relevant event authorities, so that a realistic and amicable solution can be reached and the team's participation in the tournament is smooth and successful.
The statement also said that the BCB stands firmly on giving the highest priority to the safety, security and overall well-being of the Bangladesh national cricket team.
Indian cricket website ESPN Cricinfo published a report on a virtual meeting between the BCB and the ICC yesterday (Tuesday). Their report claimed that the ICC informed the BCB that it had rejected Bangladesh's request to play matches outside India due to security concerns. They told the Bangladesh Board that Bangladesh would have to travel to India to play the T20 World Cup or risk losing points.
