The prosecution has requested the framing of formal charges in the case filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam made the application to the three-member International Crimes Tribunal headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder on Tuesday afternoon. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Along with Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun are also accused in the case.
Among the accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are absconding. Md. Amir Hossain has been appointed as a state-appointed lawyer on their behalf.
In today's hearing, Amir Hossain said that this is a historic case. He received the documents of this case on June 25. He did not have time to make the necessary preparations. Besides, he was ill. So he needs 15 days to prepare.
The tribunal granted 6 days and set the next hearing date for next Monday. On that day, the defendants will present their arguments.
The other accused in the case, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, is in prison. He was produced before the tribunal today. His lawyer Zayed bin Amjad was present at the tribunal. However, he said he would not participate in the formal charge-making hearing in the case.
