The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has taken cognizance of the formal allegations in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Rangpur's Begum Rokeya University, the first martyr of the July mass uprising.
Tribunal-2 has issued arrest warrants against 26 absconding accused out of the 30 accused in the case. Among them is former Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Md. Hasibur Rashid.
The three-member Tribunal-2 headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury passed the order on Monday. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Manjurul Bashid and Justice Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
The Chief Prosecutor's Office filed the formal complaint with Tribunal-2 this morning. 30 people were named as accused in the formal complaint.
Four of the 30 accused have been arrested. They are former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police Amir Hossain, former constable Sujan Chandra Roy and banned organization Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury alias Akash. They have been ordered to be produced before Tribunal-2 on the next hearing date. The next hearing of the case is on July 10.
The tribunal's investigation agency submitted the investigation report on the Abu Sayeed murder case to the Chief Prosecutor's Office on June 24. It named 30 people as accused.
Abu Sayeed was shot dead by police at the Park intersection adjacent to Begum Rokeya University on July 16 last year during an anti-discrimination student movement demanding quota reforms in government jobs. He was a 12th-batch student of the university's English department.
